Amusingly enough the walkthrough from
here makes it sound like you didn't even have to kill Rak, you just turned in the tear to him and followed a bit of quest dialogue and he handed you the scale. If this was the case the Shaman epic as originally implemented was definitely even easier than the rogue epic.
