How many former VZ/TZ/RZ do you really think are looking for a long slow grind? Do you think that maybe those players enjoyed the PvP part of the game more than the PvE part, and might have skipped playing here in 2012 because we just had to stubbornly cling to this idea of "classic" exp?
The slow grind and the pvp part of the game are intertwined. On emu servers with fast exp the strategy was always to just go to some desolate area of Norrath and avoid pvp while PLing yourself and your friends to 50. The people who want a server with more mid-level pvp, where your decisions have consequences, where if your character is banned it actually means something, where you have to have more than a few brain cells to be able to level to 50*, are the people who want classic exp.

Most of you are looking at this the wrong way. The point isn't to level to 50 as soon as possible. You should be happy logging in, dinging once, and then logging off to take a shower or go outside. Only with classic exp can you thoroughly experience different phases of your class's development and not breeze through it like the different levels don't matter. Being a caster with fast exp is meaningless when you can get your next spells in less time than it takes to run to the spell merchant. For a Mage, levels 1-3 are supposed to be the levels where you want to shoot yourself for not having a pet yet. For a Bard, levels 1-7 are the levels where you have to adapt to not having stringed instruments (and levels 35+, where you have to learn to group, or find another efficient soloing method). For an Enchanter, levels 1-11 are the levels where you don't have charm. For every caster, they have to be extra careful for those first 11 levels where they don't have bind, or else they might be in for a hellish corpse run. The game is supposed to test you and force you to adapt to the limitations of your class at different stages of its development. This aspect of the game is completely trivialized with fast exp. It makes no difference that Bards are slow levelers before level 8 (because they can't modify their dot with a lute yet), when the journey to level 8 only takes an hour.

This is a huge part of classic eq. It's not some negligible, tedious annoyance that the devs kept in "just because it's classic". It's actually an important part of what people enjoyed about the game. I don't know how else to explain this.

*(before you say that grinding ability doesn't imply skill, keep in mind it implies the ability to hold a camp for longer and to be able to survive longer. It also tests your ability to level at an efficient rate (read: not solo a light blue every 20 minutes). All of these things require some level of skill)

Oh how dare I insult VZTZers. I should be nicer to people like Wehrmacht, Cast, Littlegyno, Salty, and Doji. All pillars of the eqemu community.
