Eve online is a piece of shit, it has the diplomacy and all that, but really, it's just slightly more fancy than a text based mmorpg.
I've tried it, not a fan of all the safe zones/instances either.

You havent played it then....there are no safe zones there are no instances.
Its all one cluster one universe. There are no "servers" and there are no instances and it might be one of the most complex and existing mmos out there...the PvP is pure rush...compared to EQ let me put it that way. If Eve PvP Ruleset would apply to EQ you would loose ALL your equipment on you and your lvls IF you didnt pay a priest to safe your actual soul to at least keep your lvl. You wouldnt wear anything that you cannot affort to loose.
Eve online has no safe zones per say. PvP is possible everywhere. There are however security status. Security Status 1.0 to 0.5 means Concord ( Space Police) will spawn within 5-10 seconds of your attack and destroy you. 05-01 Space Police wont spawn only Spacestation turrets and Gate turrets will shoot at the agressor BUT they can be tanked, thats why on choke points there are gate camps by pirate players (pks).
However there are exceptions to the space police rules in the security area 1.0- 0.5. I freakt out a lot of bluebies by ninja looting. This is how it goes.
You scan out missions runners ( EQ terms a player that is camping say a quest mob). You use scanners to find battleships and battlecruisers that are in dead space..means they arent near a station or a gate, thats a very good indicator the player is doing a mission right now.
You take your fastest ship ( Tier 1 friget) and fly to the coordinates of the mission runner you scaned out. Then you start looting (stealing) the stuff of the npc ships he destroyed. Stealing doesent trigger space police but gives the blue kill rights on you for 15 mins. YOU are not allowed to shoot him but he is allowed to shoot you first without consequences. Now start harrassing him. Loot Quest items he needs to finish his mission. He gets mad and starts shooting at you. BAM! Thats the moment you have waited. The moment he shoots at you YOU now have the right to shoot back and kill him for the next 15 mins without space police intervention.
Since he is in a Battleship and you in a small but fast ship he wont hit you ( Big guns turn slower than small ship can fly) Now you have to be fast. You fly asap to your station where your PvP ready Battlecruiser is parked. You switch ships jump back to the coordinates and blast the bluebie out of space even in a security 1.0 system without space police intervention. You make alot of profit, and the tears of the blubie are priceless.
Thats only one of the maybe dozens ways to kill blues in "secure" areas. The easiest way is. Your Corporation ( Eve term for Guild) declares war on the Blubie corp...Baam you can shoot down any member anywhere without space police jumping in...cuz there is no need for the blubie guild to accept the war.
However Eve Online has one drawback...it is a game you have to commit too but if you do it is the best sandbox PvP , drama mmo out there hands down. With shitload of content and always something new to learn and find out.
So sry Bro you havent played it i admit thought it has a very high learning curve but i like that it never gets boring and there is always something to do...but it will eat up your real life :-D
Oh and there is always the sucide gank. If you believe you can make more profit by destroying the enemy when loosing ur ships by space police. The JihadSwarm was very succesfull that way.
