Proximity to the mob is a huge factor in who'll take the hits as well. And when I say huge factor, I mean if you're at max melee range and a dps in practically on top of the mob then the dps might pull aggro.
Advice:
Be practically on top of the mob
Only taunt when you lose aggro
Kick whenever possible
Pray for procs
