Also FYI, as far as "unknown exe's" go, you can always right click on one and do a virus scan on it. Virus Scans can usually see inside the exe and will let you know if there is anything malicious inside.

Of course you're right, I could have run a scan on the files or just have them executed on a VM. It's not mistrust in you or anybody else, but rather a "general, healthy mistrust".
