You know, I used to think that Arif Dirlik would be an awesome professor to go work with for graduate studies, but I've come to realize that he's just a has-been ivory tower Marxist (other Marxist "organic intellectuals" a la Gramsci even make this guy seem bourgeois by comparison) with no real connection to facts on the ground. Steven Harrell, on the other hand, over at UW:Seattle seems fucking awesome -- I mean, he taught himself Yi while doing anthropological research. That is just hardcore. The civilizing project is also great. Yeah, I think I go with Harrell.
