If the group members who already had the piece had said: "We will be rolling on the piece, and if we win, do with it as we please" would you still have the same objection?
Really the only difference I see is that /ran 100 would be typed by a different person.

Hell, why not just let everyone random and then allow them to auction the loot rights in /shout to the highest bidder.
