Yeah, sounds like you need more power for your new card.
also i deal with a bunch of older computers at my cheapskate work and I run into "the computer is powered on but nothing is showing up on the monitor" issue often with a certain model we have. Each time this happens I need to replace the cmos battery on the motherboard... Most likely not your resolution but something to perhaps keep in mind.
