Motherboards don't have fans, so it may have been your processor's heat sink/fan assembly that went out. Your processor then probably proceeded to get very hot and melt the seating. However, most computers have an auto shut off feature at 113C.

Given all of that, I would look around in your PC more to make sure what actually failed. Look for obvious things like charred areas and broken solder points. Don't be afraid to sniff components too; There's nothing like the smell of melted circuit board coating. Start with your power supply.

Edit: McBard is right, habitually typed 113F.
