leather jackets "can" cost 300-500 like someone mentioned, but only an uninformed retard would pay that much for one.
never walk into a store to buy motorcycle gear. walk in, get sized for your jacket/helmet/chaps/pants whatever then go online and order it for much much less.
you don't "need" to wear leather, textile is just fine. however you do need to wear a full faced helmet (stay away from modular helmets too) and be sure to cover every part of your body that has skin ...
that means no shorts, no short sleeves, no fingerless gloves. must wear boots (exhaust pipes get damn hot and if your ankle touches the wrong spot you wanna be covered).
you need to (at a minimum) take a basic riding course, often times upon successful completion they will also give you a waver to get your motorcycle endorsement without having to take the state riding test.
