I believe hyphodruid boy stole 4k from me. He told me to hail him to get him to stop and when he wouldnt stop i gave hastens the sword thinking that was how to get him to stop. Then Hypho said that was the MQ component and I screwed it up.

I have done 2 MQ with Hypho for the boots and had no problem. I always brought the gold, he brought the ring and rapier. I hailed, he turned in the Ring/Rapier and then I turned in the gold and got the boots. He then gated me to Rivervale so I could pay him. He is a little absent minded. Might have a little autism.
You did mess up the quest. You are to hail Hasten to start the interaction, not Hypho. So that is the hard part, getting Hasten to stop. What happened is you turned in the Rapier first, and when Hypho was turning in the Ring and gold, Hypho ended up completing the quest, not you. Hypho lost his Ring. That Ring is what is worth the 4K in plat, he spent hours on a waiting list and camping for in OoT. That is why he is resistant on giving you back any money would be my guess. It was your error.
