If you are going to aggro kite, definitely want to use a water pet. The cold DD shouldn’t have an aggro component like stun or root, plus it will backstab.
I would likely either farm up crystalline spider silks to keep the target rooted on pet kills/resummons or drag it around in an open space spamming Totems. In my experience Malo has very little aggro compared to a PC casted fun. Even if your class can’t cast the spell.

Jokes aside, I will prioritize the totems then. Since the silks are now too expensive to recharge, I would like to not use any "consumables" (unless they are cheap, like malachites and stun totems).
