They moved toward or past LCY but met with unexpected spawns because LCY was being the wrong type of baddies.
Either LCY didn't mind the Hand group taking the mobs they weren't pulling, or LCY busted the train from Hand group passing through.

OP got blamed for not snaring/snaring a mob that may or may not have belonged to him or his group and there was a train.
Or one of his group drowned on the way to switching to basement camp and they had to scuttle the mission.
