HAHA! I love when people don't know how to play Rangers! Why do you think their symbol is a BOW AND QUIVER?!?!?! I have a VERY low level Ranger, he's got a higher skill in Archery than in 1HS (main weap). I have a 18 in Fletching, and I have about 100 arrows with me at all times. People seem to like to SoW low level chars running from things they accidently hit, so I have a lot of chances to kite. That's a solo Ranger's main advantage: he can be faster than the MOb trying to kill him. What you are obviously doing wrong is have only ONE stack of arrows as well as NOT kiting. Also, the main reason you need a bow and arrow is that you AREN'T a melee class. You AREN'T. You use your bow as your protection in combat. The MOb shouldn't come running at you, it should be coming at a warrior.

All you have to do is root, snare, Flame Lick, shoot. Shoot. Shoot. Shoot... I currently do 11 damage with my bow despite a skill of 8 in Archery and a bow with 50/10.
I decided to roll a SSF ranger to roleplay as this guy. It's been a ton of fun. Got up to level 9 for snare, did the Poacher's Head quest for a 13/51 bow. As soon as I hit 9 I found a yellow rabid grizzly and tried bow-kite it.

Turns out snare doesn't last remotely long enough to bow-kite a yellow at level 9. I got it down to like 30% before I died, though. But it felt hilariously classic. I decided for this guy I'm gonna try to do as many of the low-level ranger quests as possible, and only wear animal-hide armor. So far I've got the three bear-hide pieces and the Rat's Foot Necklace, and I'm going to go for the NK rare nameds for lion-skin leggins, wolf-hide sleeves, and bear-hide jerkin, then round it out with snakeskin pieces from the gnolls in Rathe Lake and otterhide from Iceclad. Doubt I'll take him much past 30-40 but it's been a lot of fun so far. I'm really hoping I can complete the Jagged Pine Crook Staff and Cloak of Jaggedpine quests before I leave Qeynos/Blackburrow but that might be more of a grind than I'm looking for when this guy's just for funsies.

How do you cast a clicky or shoot an arrow while binding wounds? That would definitely be useful.

My ranger is nearing 55 and I only died a handful of times and most of the times it was due to falling of a cliff or running into a red con that roots/blinds. Just random accidents. I never really "lost" a mob either worst case you root rot or snare kite. I love my chanter but the ranger life is so much more enjoyable in general. Pulling in outdoor dungeons is also lots of fun, seen so many bad pullers it is fun trying to do it right.
Yeah this is definitely true. Snare/root/sow means pretty much all my deaths have been preventable/my fault. Does remind me of perhaps my most embarassing death on p99 though. I was soloing RCY in KC, but I didn't have enough DPS burst to prevent a spectral curate from CHing several times. When I got an add I had to hammer out, and I made it at like 52 hp and zero mana. And then I was concerned about blood aggro from the skelly on the ship so I promptly jumped off before levi-ing and killed myself.

I like knights a lot. The Ranger play style is closer to a bard but with less clicking. You have a lot of close encounters. Even fear kiting animals is better due to having a better % snare and Sow; the difference between your speed and the npc is huge. Half a SK’s leveling is with engulfing darkness while being unsowed. Jboots makes it better, as does dooming, but SoW is low grade Selos compared to Jboots (or nothing).
That's a really interesting way of looking at it. I've enjoyed both bard and ranger way more than either knight so it makes a lot of sense to me. Fear kiting on the SK has been nothing but tedium for me. Bard and Ranger both feel much more dynamic/engaging for me, although my bard petered out at 55 for the time being.

Also, I just wanna say I've really enjoyed shooting the shit and talking shop with all y'all rangers in this thread. It's never going to be the most powerful class but I've consistently had a ton of fun so far all the way from 1 to 58.
