With a mage focus item ( https://wiki.project1999.com/Magician_Focus_Items), which any class can use from inventory, you don't lose any mana when you recast pet. That makes things a lot faster.

You waste bone chips though. I usually don't try to max pet unless I'm in an area where I am looting bonechips. These days there are less low levels selling bonechips.
