maybe im misremembering my youth - but do you remember every day people identifying as a political party pre-Social media? in my entire family, i had 4 uncles (3 brothers, and 1 brother-in-law) on my mom's side that were political - and nobody else in my family ever talked about any of it. 2 of the brothers were actually involved in politics, and the other 2 were just bored middle aged guys.
my 4 uncles used to argue every Thanksgiving and other family get-together after the regular discussions died down. it was the full spectrum, too. 1 Marxist, 1 Neo-Liberal, 1 Republican and 1 Libertarian all going at it. my 5th uncle used to sit with me and say "they're all full of shit and they all think they're right. none of this shit matters".
