i know a lot of people claim that eq wasnt a toxic experience, but ive also seen a lot of people say similar things on here and on reddit lol
i had great experiences, im still friends with some of the people i met on EQ in 1999...
but it definitely felt like a hostile environment
i have a lot of wow friends who ask me about eq and talk about how they prob wouldnt like it because there was no pvp... bro the pve in eq was the pvp. people were constantly being cutthroat and fighting over camps or items. in wow pvp doesnt even feel personal, someone might kill you and then you chit chat with them afterwards and become friends.
in eq it felt like other groups were constantly training you or steal your mobs. and things got really hostile. we had blacklists for a reason.
i think its a wild larp to pretend it didnt exist because i saw the same type of behavior frequently on p99 green. on 3 different occasions when green was new i had a gm show up because of groups trying to steal each others camps (pyramid area in CT was really bad for this, but also a lot of groups in UR stealing mobs from fireplace, high levels skipping passed basement groups to try and get dwarven work boots etc).
this problem was hella worse in 1999, especially on my server. i played on the most populated server in the entire game, they tried to split it twice but it didn't work. i actually went with the original split but it sucked so bad (drinal felt dead) that i went back to tunare and leveled a new character all over again.
also you still see these same problems on TLPs. TLPs have a lot of nice players, ive had complete strangers spend real life money to use a potion to give me an exp bonus on multiple occasions, have made friends on TLP, but without the PNP, KS'ing and sniping is the meta. That's because it always was, lol. Nothing has really changed.
