And this isn't even just a religious thing: any type of group (even "liberal" political parties) will tend to become more conservative over time. The whole point of the group is to keep doing things their way ... which increasingly puts them against doing things any new way.

This. It's human nature. We like things the way they are and don't want them to change. It took most of us decades to adapt to life the way it is, and rapid change scares us.
In any group where there is a power dynamic - it's amplified. Change means a potential of losing your grip on power. So you thwart change - and the surefire way to do this is with fear of going to hell.
