Welcome to P99, As someone who rolled a Barbarian Shaman as my first ever toon back in 1999 its definitely a unique way to experience everquest for the first time, with that said I came to realize much later that the life of a barbarian shaman in norrath is much tougher than most other race/class/starting zone combos are for a brand new player, in a game thats much harder than virtually any modern game.
Don't get discouraged, if you're finding that your choice isn't working out you can always try out a different combo to find something that fits. If you do stick with the shaman they get much stronger over time. The pets are OP once you get to those levels and slow is a beautiful thing to make your life easier.
