All non-PC model illusions are broken like this. It's not even about zoning in. I have tested this with Minor Illusion. If someone is facing away from the tree or object that you are looking at when you cast the illusion, and then they turn around to see you: you will be a human stuck in the ground.
I think it has to do with rendering. If the observer cannot see the item that the Tree or Minor Illusion is copying - they will see the human model stuck in the ground.
