This is not true at all. The data on illegal immigrant crime rates is highly suspect *because* they are illegal. It's much harder to measure the crime rates of people who have an extra incentive to avoid detection in the first place.
There's also a difference between petty crime and violent crime. I'd much rather live in a neighborhood with 10 american shoplifters than one with zero american shoplifters but one illegal immigrant murderer.
It is not racist to notice that people who smuggle themselves into the country in cooperation with drug cartels might also be the type likely to commit further crimes. My family is largely scandinavian and if illegals from sweden were the issue at hand I wouldn't feel any differently about it.

The trend remains true for both violent and non-violent crime.
And you can speculate all you want "people who smuggle themselves into the country", but again ... reality doesn't agree with your imagination.
