I don't buy that this is a prank at all. so why do this ritual at all? I've seen the exact same ritual in real life before and it's the same. There are two reason why they did this ritual. It's to accelerate the destruction of mankind. It happens like this - all the observers of the sacrifice FAIL to stop or do anything to curtail this behavior or general sentiment throughout institutions or government etc. That knowledge of failure is held as GUILT in everyone that knows about it. The guilt attacks them through the universe teaching them that they did the wrong thing. This escalates from a micro to macro scale. The universe accelerates the process of mankind facing the said challenges. That's why mass media publicise the most negative things, the observer is ending up getting cursed as a result of inaction or confusion and generally accelerates the whole process of mankind facing itself. This is what the entity that they worship wants too.

The other reason is short term gain through belief of achieved sacrifice and implied contract with whatever they are making a deal with. This results in temporary gain for some but at a massive cost because you can never escape the universe quantum realm that has been created and engineered.
