I try to go hike at 11am, closed for rescue. Ok, I’ll go kill an hour at the gym. Come back, still closed at noon. Ok I’ll go get my truck washed and waxed. Then I go chill at home for a bit, come back at 1:30pm
Finally it’s fucking open, and I’m the first one there in an empty parking lot. As soon as I hop out, over rushes a park ranger
“You hike this often?”
Me: “Yes, very”
“We had to do two rescuers today”
Me: “Oh wow, yea I tried to come earlier but it was closed”
“You aware of what time it is now?”
Me: “1:30?”
“You aware it’s 101 and going to be 105?”
Me (tired of this): “Yea I’m not worried. I went up this twice in a row last weekend” (almost no one goes up twice in a row due to how challenging it is)
“It wasn’t as hot as it is today last weekend”
Me: “no you’re right it was 94” (at this point I have to make a concentrated effort not to scoff. Going up and down an entire second time is much more difficult than going up once in 6 degree hotter heat. And I could have mentioned last week on my first up I was racing to stay ahead of one of the fastest regulars on the second half)
Me:“Like I said, I would have gone up earlier but it was closed”
“Yea for two heat related rescues”
Me: “Yea”
At this point it’s basically a Mexican standoff. I’m thinking ok man, unless you are going to legally detain me I’m going up now. And I pretty much just walked away
Dude was either pissed or trying to do his due diligence or both. Either way I don’t fault him for it. And I was more than fine
But from here out it’s tiple digit temps until Oct, so I found this fitting:
