The question was about when AI in video games: answer not for a long time because priorities.
AAA game studios will lose their ass to the first indie company that makes a real AI powered game, and that could collapse the entire gaming industry.

it will be such a groundbreaking and dynamic experience that nobody will ever need to buy another game ever again.

Everytime you log into the game it'll be different, not only that it doesn't even have to be the same genre or category or anything specific, it doesn't need teams of humans writing code for development or play-testers or shareholders or any real way to make money off of it

the concept of game mechanics doesn't matter to AI

You could sit in freeport and play a simple game like /gems with bar patrons who have real time AI conversations with you

then you roam the commonlands RPG style fighting monsters and collecting quest items which you deliver to rivervale for your quest rewards

then you travel through highpass first person shooter style, running and gunning with an Elf machine gun like playing Doom

Once you arrive in the karanas you could hop on a griffon for a grand theft auto style romp around the plains and steal from the farmers, pick up gypsy girls and try to avoid getting caught by the guards

having evaded the guards long enough, you and your gypsy girl make it to qeynos hills only to be overwhelmed by gnolls and now you have to go fight through the blackburrow dungeon with cell-shaded borderlands graphics to save your princess only to find that she was sold to the ice dragon queen Lady Vox that you have to go hit with a MOP Bunker Buster deep into her ice lair
