The reason does not matter at this point in time although the chinese certainly did something different given that

i'm agreeing with you that western devs are lazy, i'm disagreeing with the notion that anyone is even going to be talking about DeepSeek a week from now.
ive already seen two other names floated as releasing soon and all the turbo autists on /g/ aren't impressed with DeepSeek at all when it comes to actually integrating it into any application the entire internet is actually using these things for currently.
their model is better at taking a high school math test, that's literally fucking it. and it "thinks" more on a question which is a restriction the west is purposely putting on the public ones atm because the tech is already blowing people's minds why run your operating costs 5x 10x more by letting it compute for longer on a answer when they can't even figure out the buisness model for it yet other than replacing call center tech support and getting rid of jobs that involve writing emails all day
