What a spectacle! And I bet had better scenery than here. I’m assuming this was pre-covid? Why was crowd stuff so much more epic then?

I used to panic when I was a running noob thinking in my head “GO! People in front, gooo! The race has started and I’m still just standing here. You are costing me time!” not realizing the clock doesn’t start until your tracker crosses the start line. Yea I was dumb [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

But when I put my expected finish time I get like corral 3-4ish. Which I usually ignore and sneak my way up to like the edge of 2 with all the fast people. And I always see some race noobs just arrive late, confused, and move the barrier to hop in wherever they can near the start line. And I’m thinking ma’am no offense but if I can see your back fat hanging out your tank top you should not be here in corral 2…

The more people the merrier though I always think. My favorite part is a little after the start when everyone is able to space out enough to start trucking and you’re just in this huge throng of running people spaced only like 2 feet apart. I feel powerful, like part of an army. And then when it thins out you start to notice race rivals and people who you just happen to sync up with pace wise. I’m competitive but also enjoying myself so if someone passes me I’m like fuck you, I’ll catch up later. But if someone catches up and then stays the same speed I’m like “oh wassup, let’s cruise a while”

I was one of the only ones still wasting energy to air drum my water bottle and phone whenever my music hit too, even at like mile 12 lol

And with that many people it’s fun to be able to people watch as you run. I saw some dude this year running in sandals. Like flip flop sandals. Fast. I was like, are those fucking sandals bro? And on the more grim side, towards the end I did see another dude off the track down on one knee. And I slowed down like uh oh is this guy dying? But I had to keep on
Yeah pre-covid, I think 2015 or 2016. I hate the first 5-10 minutes of bigger races, literally your pace is snared but at the same time most people go out of the gate a little too quick and pacing is important.

Scenery in Newcastle was okay, if you ever visit the north of England its grey and industrial looking in places (from a southerner's perspective). The crowd though were fantastic. Most crowds at running events really get behind the runners which I know I appreciate lol

I once saw a few guys dressed as Roman centurions at a 10k event (no weapons), running in the most flat sandals and actually keeping a good pace but that can't have been good on their feet lol. One day I want to do some kind of fancy dress/cosplay for one [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]
