I just find the "we must understand the root cause" thing so galling at this point. Insisting to the public that yet another instance of a completely obvious and identifiable pattern of global terrorism should be thought of as somehow isolated strikes me as flagrantly irresponsible and cowardly.

I agree that trying to solve the “root cause” always just becomes a cop out to do nothing. Pretend you are working when the boss comes by while sitting on your phone
“I’m sorry sir, I know you have cancer but our oncology center has decided to devote all its resources to figuring out the root causes of cancer and stopping those”
“But I have cancer now, it’s killing me”
“Sorry sir, the root cause is more important”
But in regards to recent events. Some dude got divorced, lost his mind over it, and went on a rampage. It’s not all that dissimilar from many other criminal actions like that in the past
It was the divorce and the need for demonstrating re-establishing control that was the “root cause” there
