Yeap, one thing that I didn't convey at all since I wasn't able to include the quest text is that every Snowdrift Elf really reinforces the idea that it's better to share your gifts with one another.
I've been getting coal 30% of the time by greed opening them, and I suspect that, at the very least, that'll be less/none at all when sharing (someone plz confirm). I haven't been able to find a use for the coal (tried turning 1x to each elf/4x into Merrith, giving Merrith some food w/ coal, looking for recipes that might be able to use it since it identifies as smelling like fruitcake), and I really doubt there's a turn-in bailout for them anyway given all of the encouragement to share
