Mostly for the spectacle

When you have 15,000ish contestants (x2 for spectators) all gathering in the same place for the same purpose there’s a kind of energy and shared excitement that is hard to describe, one of those have to be there sort of things. You sort of feel a connection to others without even saying a word

And while it is important to be able to push yourself solo, there’s nothing like a crowd yelling encouragement and a tangible “opponent” just up ahead to pass to motivate me personally to gun it harder. Or to stay ahead of someone, sometimes you sort of inadvertently find a “race adversary” who you end up going back and forth with in passing/being passed as you each play the mental game of managing one’s energy, fatigue, and remaining strength through the miles. It’s a lot of mental work and having tangible “threats” makes it easier to do that work. In fact, when I run solo if it’s a timed preparation run I’m visualizing the upcoming race environment as I push myself

But anyway, that’s just my whimsy. It’s not for everyone
