There were some commercial products that would work well enough with dx9 games. 3 that I know of are VorpX, IZ3d and Tridef.
They would convert the single viewport camera in a dx9 game into two cameras and then render a stereoscopic view for a proper 3d view and not just a projection onto a virtual screen 20 feet infront of you. If you had a 3d monitor from the 2010s it was typically compatible, but I dont know if VR headsets still support stereoscopic rendering and mine is in storage so I can't try it.
