Two Towers is by far the best of the trilogy imo. Fellowship sets everything up great and gets you invested but honestly it gets a bit plodding during that long fight in the woods at the end (though the boromir death scene still gets the feels).
RoTK was just sensory overload when I saw it and the giant armies just seemed too over the top huge to be believable. Plus then none of it matters cause the invincible ghost army just wipes everyone out in two seconds. Anticlimactic.
Two towers though is amazing all the way through. The epic battle is appropriately scaled, that final scene with gandalph riding the horse down the mountainside is just gorgeously executed. Theodin's storyline is super epic and heartbreaking when gandalf frees him and he realizes his son is dead. It's by far the most mature of the three films.
Oh also best original score ever, by a mile. Howard Shore killed it completely, the format is now won.
