If you're a cheapskate, I believe the new Erudite sewing kit's combine
button doesn't chew up items (I haven't tested this with an Erudite -
all other races get 'only Erudites may use this sewing kit'). It weighs
0.4 and holds 8 items like a standard sewing kit, and is available from
vendors in Erudin and Paineel for the same price as a regular sewing kit
(a plat and a bit). Expect them to nerf this and make it a difficult to
smith item instead sometime soon...
So now you have a cheap, safe alternative to those
backpacks-tailored-from-lead.

These comments note that the Vale Sewing Kit, Feir'Dal Sewing Kit, and Erudite Sewing Kit started at 0.4 wt. These represent the biggest changes (0.4 to 4.0 wt) mentioned in the original message by Absor. Also worth noting that the cultural kits didn't present a combine risk for other races.
