I actually kinda like Sam Seder as a person, I dunno why
I would like to debate him on some things tho. Like I know it’s hard to pick a perfectly fitting analogy on the spur of a moment, but right off the bat in the video he compares a trans person asking for the pronouns to be respected to any other adult who politely asks to be called by a different name. Like I don’t go by “x” anymore, please call me “y”, usually a reversal of their formal or nickname
And that’s fine, that analogy fits. What really matters is what happens if neither request is respected. For example, if I don’t like someone who goes by “James” and hates being called Jim, I might just call him Jim. Why? Because, fuck Jim. I’d call him James if he was my friend and I liked him, but if I didn’t like him, why would I honor his request?
And then what happens to me if I don’t? Well, James would be pissed at me but that’s it. I wouldn’t lose my job. I wouldn’t be threatened with arrest. I wouldn’t be accused of violence towards Jim
So while the requests are similar, refusal creates very different consequences. Refusing one is much worse than refusing another, I think everyone can agree on that
And since I don’t have time atm to finish the rest of the Sam Seder video, let’s watch a classic clip of a newscaster who had beef with sportsball player deliberately calling him by the wrong name:
