Christianity wasn't better, it was just viral. Pagans saw little to no need to convert other people to their religion, in fact a lot of their cults dedicated to specific Gods or rituals were secret and basically invite only. Evolution applies to institutions just like it does to stories, and to biological life, and the religion that is obsessed with proselyting (Islam for example) is going to survive and propagate more than one that isn't.

Christianity also had the benefit that it was all about YOU. Christ, a God, just like the Pagan Gods but BETTER, he died for YOU!!!

Culture ended up winning out anyway, as Christianity fragmented to reflect the individual cultural influences of the places it had spread. Protestantism, for example, being the application of Christianity to Germanic culture (Protestant ethic, etc). There isn't currently a denomination still existing that in any way resembles what Christianity originally was.
