This is why I am a technological determinist. Everyone here is arguing about decisions and consequences and "making the wrong choice."
Human history is the story of a species that has continuously chased the tail of its own inventions, dealing both with their intended and unintended consequences.
A technological determinist is baffled that people
on a roller coaster argue about how the roller coaster needs to go this way, or it needs to not be built, or some people need to be careful. And surely there is an age limit!
Things make sense when you realize human evolution has always been a giant game of technological crack the whip. We're just passengers on a very risky ride, that involves technological hurdles not all species [edit: or individuals] pass. We are doing fairly well, all things considered.
