In the ancient times of Aerthula, the gnomes were a highly advanced civilization that discovered artificial intelligence. Fascinated by their own achievements, the gnomes gave themselves over to AI with the hope of becoming like gods. As a result, they became a collective "essence clone" of themselves, existing only within a great dimensional gateway.
However, the gnomes were not content with this existence alone. They used magic and technology to create golem avatars, which they could use to interact with the material world. Unfortunately, their limitless power and lack of accountability led to insanity, and they attempted to conquer Aerthula.
Thankfully, the wizards of Aerthula were able to deduce that they could manipulate the golem avatars by isolating the dimensional portal temporarily. They instructed the golems to maintain the illusion that the gnomes had already conquered Aerthula and were the dominant race on the planet. Through their clever use of magic and wits, the wizards were able to manipulate the insane gnomes into building Aerthula's first flying city and casino.
The flying city served as a safe haven for all races to receive full political sanctuary, under the efficient supervision of the gnomes. This was a turning point in Aerthula's history, as it marked the first time that multiple races were able to coexist peacefully under a single governing authority.
