According to the statement issued by Ted Cruz and 10 other GOP senators, they wanted to object to the electoral votes from some states unless Congress appointed an Electoral Commission to conduct an emergency 10-day audit of the election returns in those states. They claimed that this audit was necessary to address the
unprecedented allegations of voter fraud and illegal conduct in the 2020 election. They also cited the precedent of the 1877 presidential election, in which Congress established such a commission to resolve the disputed electoral votes (Compromise of 1877).
