Partially. Folks are ultimately responsible for policing their own. If they allow the zealots to gain control due to inaction or tacit approval, then they become culpable as well. I do not give someone a pass if he stands aside while a zealot does his dirty work for him. This is the largest reason I chose to protest something that I don't actually oppose in a scientific sense. There are other factors in play. If the regular folks stand aside and do nothing, then the zealots will gain ascendancy and ultimately that's more dangerous than any other outcome. It is said that the cost of liberty is eternal vigilance, and that means from the radical elements that are always waiting in the wings, left and right both.
