I've heard that line too many times myself to readily tolerate it. Do you have proof beyond gut instinct? Better be sure, because otherwise telling a sick person "You're making it up!" amounts to one of the most jack-assed things you can say.
I've had the discussion with some folks on this board before about how poorly America's culture generally reacts towards sick folks.
