I always assumed they were called gauges for the same reason you refer to lengths of chain or cable in gauges, or shotgun shells... the radius or diameter of the little insert thing? I guess I never really thought about how or why they became called that, nor do I know if they actually start with a piercing
I just know they look unappealing, like nose rings, to me. I love tattoos, I'll probably get even more than I have now, but I never got into the gauges or the body mod stuff. I saw a dude that had the ball bearing studs in his face once, didn't look like much fun to me
