Never turn your back on the ocean. You can catch a rogue wave and it flips you over and you go head first into the sand. He was in his 70s, but a really nice, albeit weird guy. Worst part was I had to find a new place to live since his estranged son flew up and sold all his stuff at a firesale price. I was about a year away from buying the place from him.
He would rant about exploring the hoover dam unrestricted and having huge beach parties where the police would show up and drink too. Different world for sure.
We went hiking and park ranger gave him a hard time for going off trail a bit and he couldn't believe it, he said back in his 30s you would just camp anywhere you liked, did anything you wanted, and just tried to clean up as best you could, the rangers were there to share a beer and stories with. He got a rude awakening on our trips but still had a good time.
