hell i've got a friend who landed a 32 on his ACT but never managed to go to college due to alcoholism. thankfully he was accepted into southern illinois university this year. unfortunately the drinking has failed to cease.

Already at this point in his life, your friend is definitely an alcoholic and needs help badly. He'll be lucky to finish college (my bet is he won't), let alone get a job that will support him. Intervention is a tough option. Usually the better you are as a friend, the harder it is to approach him. Get someone else or a group to do it. He'll be better for it and you'll have a settled conscience. My wife and I have seen way to many "good" friends die tragically because of alcohol.
On a scale of 1-10 with respect to this post, I'm probably a 0. I had the occasional drink in college. A friend (girl) bought me 3 drinks when I turned 21. I've never tried a cigarette even though I enjoy a nice cigar once in a while on a balmy night with a scotch. I've never tried any type of drug, except for an Advil or Motrin.
