Recently came out for example UP is paying its thermite welders on order of ~$31/hr, this coming out because RR workers are on the verge of striking and the government's trying to prevent it so there's federal involvement between the respective parties. Factoring in layoff time, etc, some of those guys aren't making all that much. Consistent hours, proper pay on-time, overtime, etc, yeah they'll make a lot more than $40K. Same thing as the gender gap, what's present in practice can usually be explained away for reasons that do hold up upon scrutiny.
I’ve heard differences in gender pay can also be due to men being more likely to aggressively negotiate their salary whereas women tend to be more passive accepting the initial salary offered
