Neither one of you can speak for God. This is why we have the first amendment and we don’t try to find the correct path like the Byzantine empire used to. They had a centuries long struggle over Iconography because factions differed in whether the nation could find favor with God by having or banning icons.
It’s dumb and doesn’t belong in the 21st century. I’ve believed in God since I was old enough to think but honestly, imposing those beliefs theoufh the force of government is a terrible idea

I'm not speaking for god. I don't even take any of the holy books of any faith literally, I can get just as much moral guidance from a comic book or a documentary. I just know bullshit when I see it, and I see it frequently. They don't even abide by their own stated beliefs. I consider myself a deist or something if I had to put a sticker on it. I believe in the existence of god, or some kind of higher power I guess, but I believe that god gave us brains so we'd use them. Or brains evolved so that we'd use them. I agree that the government should be absolutely secular.
I always liked that phrase "Men will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest."
