You've got half of this wrong about who shoves what, but you're not all wrong. I think maybe it's transitioning toward the way you think it now is?

I read an article about Huey Lewis a couple of years ago. He explained he turned to typical old school rock-and-roll as rebellion against punk rock in the 70s. Punk might have seemed counter-culture to most around the country, but where he grew up in Marin County, it was the local mainstream for kids his age at the time.
