China and Russia are making the same moves at the same time for the same reason. China would need to take Taiwan before they could take the south pacific, Russia would need to take Ukraine before they could march on Europe.
These are pre-emptive strikes to start World War 3. They couldn't possibly launch an invasion with ally troops in friendly neighboring nations parked on their doorstep. That is why Russia invaded and sealed off Georgia on the opposite side of the Black Sea and China took Hong Kong, Taiwan and Ukraine are simply the last step of their plan.
