Ukraine never had operational nuclear weapons. They couldn't launch them and they couldn't maintain them. The weapons they had also had zero deterrent value against any neighboring country as they all had a minimum range of 5-10k miles. They had no effect upon any possible aggression from a neighboring country.
No one is responsible for defending the Ukraine except the Ukrainians. They're a grown up country, they can handle their own affairs.
If France gives up it's nuclear weapons, are we and the rest of Europe then responsible for their defense?

Non-proliferation is in everyones interest so I would say yes. France shall be defended for the half-life of the surrendered fissible material.
That's a square deal.
