Yes, their defense would have been expensive because their defense is extremely tenuous to non-existent.
I understand that big powerful companies have lots of money, but if it was that easy for a totally unknown private citizen to sue a major corporation and get a "nuisance payout" it would happen much more often than it does.
The fact they settled in this specific case, given the relevant circumstances of each party, *obviously* points to guilt on the part of CNN. They are saying "look, just take this small amount and go away, ok? You're just a poor rube, after all.". And *still* you side with CNN, after they exhibit every slimey litigious car salesman attribute in the book.
