There's lots to look forward to whether you're a casual player or a raider. Still, I think it's sad that Velious is the point when those two types of players are officially placed far apart. In original and Kunark, almost all the high-end gear can be traded and often acquired with just a group and there's not a huge difference between someone in raid gear and someone with good tradeable gear. Most of the BiS pieces can be traded. In Velious, every slot has a BiS piece that's only available to hardcore raiders, and you can get +100 HP/30+ AC/20 resists in pretty much every slot if you're one of those. Velious is the real dawn of the überguilds and the two-tier playerbase where the non-raiders become kind of second rate. If you're a casual player, there's something discouraging about the feeling that every piece of gear you own can be upgraded significantly if you were a raider. It makes the game feel less open.

All that said, the item I look forward to the most is Eyepatch of Plunder. I loved that shit. Pretty good stats and a priceless clicky. My ranger wore it until whatever expansion it was that came after PoP.
What he said. Ultimately, this bifurcation of the player base and continued changes along these lines was one of the major factors in the demise of EQ as the King of MMOs. Still, Velious should be fun.
