I honestly think people rooting against kyle in this just fundamentally don't believe in self defense, because this is a textbook example of it by every conceivable metric. If this wasn't self defense, what IS? It always seems to be people who know nothing about gun laws who think you aren't allowed to shoot somebody, ever, unless they also have a gun.
